Sappho, the mother of lyric poetry, was known as the tenth muse because of her gift of poetry.

Sappho lived on the island of Lesbos. Because much of her poetry expresses her love for women (some see it as platonic love; others see sexual love), the term lesbian was coined after the name of Sappho's island.
